Kochi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commission the first squadron of ‘MH60 Romeo’ helicopters at the naval headquarters in Kochi on March 6. The squadron, comprising six helicopters, will be deployed under the Southern Naval Command.
Of the 24 MH60 Romeo helicopters procured from the United States by Bharat, six have already been delivered to the country in the initial phase and will constitute the newly formed squadron. The primary objective of this squadron is to bolster maritime security by thwarting potential incursions by Chinese submarines into Indian waters and conducting surveillance operations.
Each MH60 Romeo helicopter carries an estimated price tag of around Rs 583 crores and boasts impressive capabilities, including a top speed of 267 km per hour. Equipped with advanced radar, sensors, and sonar technology, these helicopters are capable of detecting and engaging submarines beneath the sea surface.
