By planting at least one tree per person, biodiversity can be conserved. Trees play a crucial role in conserving biodiversity by creating habitats, supporting a diverse range of species, and contributing to the overall health and resilience of ecosystems. Trees are excellent at carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption. The reduction of CO2 reduces the greenhouse effect on the atmosphere and mitigates climate change. Climate change is alarming the world countries.
In 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) proposed to the UN General Assembly to dedicate June 5 as World Environment Day to raise awareness among the world nations about environmental protection and sustainability.
The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 with the theme “Only One Earth”. Since then, several environmental themes have been undertaken. This year, World Environment Day marks the completion of 50 years of establishment, and the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
The increased usage of single-use plastic affects biodiversity and harms the entire ecosystem. The oceans and coastal ecosystems are facing major threats from plastic pollution. A large quantity of plastic pollution that travels through rivers and reaches the ocean not only affects the marine ecosystem but also the entire ecosystem.
Plastic debris all around the world is becoming land fill, and such lands would never support plant growth. In this way, the plastic that hits the ground will not dissolve in the soil for decades and will remain as plastic. Several environmentalists suggest governments to stop single-use plastic production, single-use plastic water bottles, etc. On the other hand, the use of plastic has been increasing drastically. In this situation, this Environment Day calls for reducing plastic use as much as possible.
