Cochin: Bittu John, a prominent green warrior, said that lack of attention in our daily lives is the cause of natural destruction and the excessive use of plastic is shocking. On the occasion of celebrating World Environment Day at Elamakkara Saraswathy School, Cochin, Bittu John participated in a tree pooja ceremony. Bittu John, a young green warrior from Kothamangalam, is known for quitting his aeronautical engineering job and starting a grocery shop without using any polythene material.
Bittu explained the initiatives taken by several foreign countries to mitigate the use of plastic in their daily lives and the role of citizens in the country. He added that none of such initiatives can be successful without the cooperation of citizens. He alarmed according to the NGO World Wildlife Fund (WWF), every human being are unknowingly having around 5 grams of plastic, which is as much as an ATM card. Bittu said that several foreign countries have started making tooth brushes with bamboo material instead of plastic and encouraged students to use eco-friendly paper pens and fountain pens instead of plastic ballpoint pens. The programme also called upon the students to practise eco-brick.
In the event, Saraswati School Principal Chentamarakshan, Vice Principal Deepa K Nair, Eco Club Coordinator Manjusha C K had participated. In the awareness programme, Vice Principal Deepa inaugurated the tree pooja ceremony as an honour to Environment Day and said the honour should never be for a single day; she called up the students to make environmental conservation activities a habit. All the students from the school have also attended the event.
