First phase voting for the 47 seats of the Assam Assembly began today at 7am. Around 81,09,815 voters are eligible to vote in Assam.
The Assam Assembly election is being held in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6. Counting of votes will take place on May 2. Altogether 264 candidates, including 23 women, are in the fray. Some of the prominent faces are Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowol, state Congress chief Ripun Bora and Raijor Dal’s Akhil Gogoi.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that the polling will be extended for an hour in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The first phase of elections begins in Assam. Urging those eligible, to vote in record numbers. I particularly call upon my young friends to vote,” tweeted Narendra Modi.
A total of 300 companies of security forces have been deployed in the first phase in Assam, in which voting will take place at 11,537 polling stations across 12 districts.
