Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Banerjee is ready to take the new role as Chancellor of WB Universities and she is to be elected soon. The state assembly passed the bill today that replaces Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, who is currently serving the post.
182 members supported the bill and 40 voted against it when the West Bengal assembly passed the University Laws Amendment Bill, 2022.
The bill was introduced by the state education minister Bratya Basu and it has come as part of the long conflict and debates between the central and state governments on power sharing. Bratya Basu said that there is nothing wrong in the decision of handing over the chancellor position to the CM.
“Why can’t the chief minister be the chancellor of state universities if the Prime Minister is the chancellor of a central university- Viswa Bharati? You can go through the recommendations of the Punchhi Commission”. “The governor, who is the present chancellor, has violated protocols on various occasions.”, said Bratya Basu.
BJP leadership held a protest and said that this is an explicit attempt of Mamatha Banerjee Government that aims to confiscate all power.
