Kochi: The Kerala High Court division bench granted bail to Fr Thomas Kattoor and Nun Sephy, who had found guilty in the murder of sister Abhaya (1992) in an investigation led by the CBI.
The bail has strict conditions including, a bond of 5 lakh rupees and an order to not leave the state.
Fr. Thomas Kottoor and Nun Sephy are the first and third accused in this case. The plea was charged on the argument that the CBI had passed the sentence without considering the facts and evidence. They also demanded that the sentence be suspended and the bail be granted.
The bail was granted the divisional bench headed by Justice K Vinod Chandran.
The plea demanding suspension of the imprisonment is also under the consideration of the High Court of Kerala. The culprits wanted to get a stay order until the High Court consider their case. And now, this has accepted by the High Court.
On December 23, 2020, Fr Thomas Kottur was sentenced to double life imprisonment and Sister Sefi to life imprisonment in the Abhaya murder case. The verdict was handed down by the Thiruvananthapuram CBI court.
