27 take oath as Rajya Sabha members

New Delhi, July 8 (UNI) Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal, Congress’ Jairam Ramesh and Mukul Wasnik, Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Jayant Choudhary and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Surendra Nagar were among 27 newly elected members who took oath as Rajya Sabha members on Friday.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu administered the oath of membership to them. Sitharaman, Goyal and Nagar were re-elected to the Upper House.

The new members who took oath came from 10 states. Of these, 12 took oath in Hindi, four in English, two MPs each in Sanskrit, Kannada, Marathi and Odia and one member each in Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

After the ceremony, Naidu clarified that even those newly elected members who have not yet taken oath can vote in the presidential election. Naidu said the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament will be conducted under the Covid-19 protocol.

Other members who took oath today include Dr. K. Laxman, Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai, Kalpana Saini, Sultana Dev and R. Dharmar.
