New Delhi: The top court today stated that the plea submitted by former IPS officer, accused in NDPS case cannot be entertained. Justices Hemanth Gupta and Vikram Nath, while considering the plea, observed that the charges if proven are very serious.

Thereafter, Sajeev Bhatt’s lawyer sought to withdraw the bail plea. The plea was challenging the verdict pronounced by the Gujarat High Court on 31 January 2020. Veteran advocate Mukul Rohatagi and Maninder Singh with adv. Deepanwita Priyanka were present on behalf of the state of Gujarat.

The SDPS case against Sajeev Bhatt is that In 1996, while he was the superintendent at Banaskanta, he actively involved in the conspiracy, targeted and trapped a lawyer in drug case. It was later confirmed that Sanjeev Bhatt himself had kept 1.5 kg drugs in a hotel at Palanpur.

Recently, Ahmedabad police’s Crime Branch had arrested Sanjeev Bhatt in connection with Gujarat riot, for forging documents. The case is that Sanjeev Bhatt , Teesta Setalvad and R B Sreekumar conspired against people including then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi and falsely implicated several people to manipulate the Gujarat riots case in 2002.

Sajeev Bhatt was sentenced for life imprisonment in connection with a custodial death case of 1990. Gujarat court had pronounced life imprisonment to Sanjeev Bhatt in June 2019.
