Islamabad: Former cricketer Shahid Afridi gave an explanation after the incident of his daughter waving the tricolor flag during the Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan, which was turned into a controversy by religious fundamentalists. Afridi said that his daughter raised the Indian flag because she could not get the Pakistani flag. His response was in an interview given to Pakistani media.
There were only 10 percent of Pakistanis in the stadium to watch the game and more were Indian fans. So the Indian flag was mostly present in the stadium. The Pakistan flag was not found. Then he bought an Indian flag for his daughter to wave. Afridi also stated that he had also received video footage of his daughter raising the Indian flag.
The daughter hoisted the Indian flag during the match at the Dubai International Stadium on September 4. It was broadcasted by the channels. After this, Afridi and his family were severely criticized and threatened by religious fundamentalists. Following this, the former cricketer came forward with an explanation that he did not get the flag.
