Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Metropolis Court sentenced Gujarat Congress Working President Jignesh Mevani to six months imprisonment. The verdict is against Mevani and 18 others. The court had found Mevani and other accused guilty of violence in connection with the name change of Gujarat University.
In 2016, major incidents of violence were witnessed under the leadership of Mevani demanding that Gujarat University be named Dr B R Ambedkar. The police registered a case following the incident. Mevani is currently on bail granted by the Assam Court. He was arrested by the police for spreading threatening messages against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter.
In 2017, Mevani was jailed for 3 months for holding a rally without permission in Gujarat. Along with him, 10 people including Reshma Patel, Kaushik Parmar and Subodh Parmar of the National Dalit Authority Manch were sentenced to imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1000.
