Following the earthquake, the Taiwan Railway Department has suspended trains on the Hualien-Taitung route. The high-speed rail service has also been suspended.

A tsunami warning was issued in neighboring Japan after a strong earthquake in Taiwan. A warning says waves up to 3 feet high are possible.
This is the second earthquake to hit Taiwan in 24 hours. Taitung was hit by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake last night. There have been no reports of casualties.
