Chennai: CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan passed away. He died while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. He was being treated for cancer. He was admitted to the hospital on August 29.
He was born in 1953 at Kodiyeri in Kannur. The body will be taken to Kannur in air ambulance tomorrow morning. Cremation will take place day after tomorrow at Payyambalam. From 1970 to 1979 he served as SFI State Secretary. He has also served as the All India President of SFI. Kodiyeri, who served as Kannur district secretary of DYFI and district secretary of CPM, was elected as MLA from Thalassery in 1982, 1987, 2001, 2006 and 2011 elections. He was the Minister of Home Affairs and Tourism from 2006 to 2011. He was elected to PB in 2008. Later he held the charge of CPM State Secretary for a long time.
