Thiruvananthapuram: The left wing senate members rejected the ultimatum issued by Governor Arif Muhammad Khan. They rejected the ultimatum that orders to appoint a senate representative, to the search committee to appoint Kerala University Vice Chancellor, before 11th. They had to attend yesterday’s meeting but it could not be held as the members abstained.
Meanwhile, 64 LDF members sent a letter to the registrar stating that the meeting is illegal. Usually 19 people must be present to fill the quorum. But apart from the VC, only 13 people including 2 nominated by the Governor and 10 UDF members attended the meeting.
Pro Vice Chancellor and 11 members nominated by the Governor abstained from the meeting. The total number of Senate members is 103. Currently, the number of members is 91. The quorum consists of 1/5 of the current members. The decision of LDF to not appoint a representative as the Governor did not agree with the demand to dissolve the search committee formed by excluding the senate representative.
But it is said that they avoid the quorum in the current situation as an election is needed to be held if the meeting is called only to propose the representative.
