Thiruvananthapuram: The Department of Public Education has decided to remove the distinction between boys and girls from the names of the general schools in the state.
Mixed schools can no longer be known as ‘Girls’ or ‘Boys’. The decision is on the basis of an order issued by the Child Rights Commission.
Many of the schools that permit both girls and boys are still known as either ‘Boys’ or ‘Girls’. The Child Right Commission has found that such names will cause distress in the minds of the children who are studying there.
The instruction is to change the name of such schools as per the instruction of the education officer. It is also said that all official documents should also be edited.
