New Delhi: Justice D Y Chandrachud has been appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India. The President of India Droupadi Murmu has appointed DY Chandrachud as the new CJI with effect from November 9, 2022.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22” ,said Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in his tweet .

CJI U U Lalit had recommended the name of Justice Chandrachud as his successor, as he is the senior-most Judge of the top court. Justice D Y Chandrachud will be the CJI till 10 November 2024.
Justice Y Y Chandrachud, the father of Justice D Y Chandrachud, was the 16th Chief Justice of India, the longest serving CJI, from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985.
