New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered to release Manichan, the accused in the Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy case. SC said that the release cannot be delayed as he is unable to pay the fine of Rupees 30.45 lakh.
The decision comes up on a petition filed by Usha, Manichan’s wife. The case was considered by a bench comprising Justices Aniruddha Bose and Vikramnath.
In an affidavit filed by the state Government, it was given that if the culprit failed to pay the fine, he will be again subjected to 22 years and 9 months of imprisonment. The court asked the government, which could not stop selling the fake liquor, must have the capability to pay the compensation to the victim’s families.
Usha’s lawyer pointed out that two other accused Vinod Kumar and Manikandan had been released from the jail without paying the fine. That case was also considered by the SC while hearing Manichan’s case.
