Thiruvananthapuram: Today, the fishermen’s strike under the leadership of the Latin Archdiocese in the construction of Vizhinjam port is passing its 100th day. On July 24, fishermen started a strike against the Vizhinjam port in front of the Secretariat. Church believers including fishermen from 196 parishes of Thiruvananthapuram district will protest today.
The movement of the strike committee is to approach the port by sea from Muthalapozhi and give a strong warning. More than 100 fishing boats will protest in the sea. There is a mass convention in Mullur, Vizhinjam, Muthalapozhi today. The protesters will also block Thalappozzi Bridge. With this, traffic along the coastal road may also be disrupted.
This is the second time that protests are being held on land and sea. Several times the discussions held by the Latin Sabha with the ministerial sub-committee failed. The District Magistrate and the High Court directed the Latin Sabha to demolish all the illegal constructions in the project area.
