New Delhi: The nation is celebrating the 146th birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the iron man and the first Home Minister of India, today. As part of the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the Central Government has organised various programmes in all states. Patel was born on 31 October, 1875.
Various programmes are being organised at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. A laser show is being arranged in Ahmedabad to exhibit the efforts taken by Patel to hold up the unity of the nation at the time of freedom struggle. A memorial speech will also be held at the Home Ministry and other Central Government offices in New Delhi.
It was in 2014, after Narendra Modi sworn in as the PM, the birthday of Patel started to be known as ‘Ekta Divas’. In Allahabad, a huge and tallest statue of Patel was made and dedicated to the nation. The statue was made in order to remind people about the remarkable efforts of Patel to maintain the unity of the princely states under the governance of India.
