Gandhinagar: Death toll rises in cable bridge collapse accident. The latest reports indicate that 142 people, including women and children, died. 170 people have been rescued. Police have registered an FIR against the contract agency that renovated the bridge. The Gujarat government has appointed a special team to investigate the incident. It is reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Morbi tomorrow, where the accident happened.
Out of the 142 people who died, 45 were minors. A two-year-old baby has also died. Among the dead were 12 family members of BJP MP Mohanbhai Kundariya from Rajkot. Saudi Arabia, the US mission and Russian President Putin expressed their condolences over the tragedy. Three of the victims are still missing. The search for them is in progress.
About 500 people were standing on the bridge at the time of the accident. It is indicated that more than the permitted number of people were there on the bridge, which led to the accident. Police have detained nine employees of Ajanta Infrastructure Limited who completed the renovation work of the bridge in the incident. The investigation is in progress.
