Thiruvananthapuram: The First Kerala awards have been announced. The award is given to individuals who have made comprehensive contributions to the society in various fields. This is the highest award of the state government on the pattern of Padma awards by the central government.
Kerala Jyoti award was presented to M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Omchery N. N. Pillai, T. Madhava Menon, actor Mammootty, and Dr. Satyabhama Das Biju, Gopinath Muthukad, Kanayi Kunjiraman, Kochouseph Chittilappilly, M.P. Parameswaran and Vaikom Vijayalakshmi were also awarded the Kerala Shri Award.
The first highest state award Kerala Jyoti is given to one person, the second highest state award Kerala Prabha to two people and the third highest state award Kerala Sri to five people in consideration of comprehensive contributions in various fields.
The award is decided by three levels namely Primary Screening Committee, Secondary Screening Committee and Awarding Committee. The recommendations submitted by the Secondary Scrutiny Committee were analyzed by the Award Committee consisting of Adoor Gopalakrishnan, T K A Nair and Dr Khadija Mumtaz.
