Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s name has been removed from the voter list. The process is done by Electoral Registration Officer Rampur. It was decided to remove Azam Khan’s name from the voter list based on a complaint by BJP by-election candidate Akash Saxena. Azam Khan, who was convicted in the hate speech case.
Azam Khan was convicted by the court last week in the hate speech case that took place in 2019. He was then disqualified from the post of Rampur MLA. Azam Khan was sentenced to three years in prison in the case. By-elections have been announced for the Rampur Sadar assembly seat following the removal of Azam Khan from the post of MLA.
Meanwhile, Azam Khan had approached the Supreme Court questioning his expulsion from the Legislative Assembly. The Top Court directed the Sessions Court at Rampur to hear the petition. The Sessions Court heard the petition and rejected Azam Khan’s demand. With this, by-elections were announced in Rampur assembly constituency. The Election Commission has released the notification for the by-election.
