Kochi: M Anil Kumar, the Mayor of Kochi Municipality has said that the incident of a child fallen in an open drainage is tragic and he also clarified that the child fell into the canal and not to the drainage. He also stated that they are checking whether the municipality can afford the complete medical expenses of the child. He also said that if it is not possible, the mayor himself can afford the charges.

Mayor said that the municipality will take extra care to avoid such incidents in the future. Barricades will be placed in the location and he also welcomes all instructions issued by the court.

Today, the High Court expressed its shock over the incident and Justice Devan Ramachandran said that the incident is shocking and pointed out the authority failed in maintaining the roads and footpaths. It is the Secretary who appeared in the court from the side of Kochi Corporation. The court asked the Secretary if it is right to keep the drains open and also said that the secretary has been called to ask these things directly.

Court asked the Secretary if he is sure whether a child going out on a bicycle will return home safely. HC also reminded that Kochi is a metro city and the municipality is responsible for the proper maintenance of the footpath and drainage.
