New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the centre and Attorney General R Venkataramani on a Public Interest Litigation filed by gay couples seeking legal security to same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act.
Before issuing the notice, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli heard the submissions of Advocate Mukul Rohtgi.
The petitioners, Supriyo Chakraborthy and Abhay Dang are natives of Hyderabad. The demand in the petition is that the same-sex marriage should be included under the Special Marriage Act of 1954. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the plea today.
Supriyo Chakraborthy and Abhay Dang have been living together for the last ten years. They got married on 21 st December 2021. They married in the presence of their parents and close friends after completing nine years of their love.
At present, only the marriages between two persons of the opposite sex are covered under the Special Marriage Act. It is given in the petition that same-sex marriages are denied legal protection.
