Kochi: Kochi port is all set to excel in the trade sector. The Centre Government has plans to increase the depth to increase the convenience of the large ships at the ports. The project worth Rs 380 crore will come under the ‘Sagarmala’ that aims to make the Kochi port a transhipment hub.
As per the plan, the draft depth will be raised to 16 meters in the first phase. The current depth of the ship is 14.5 meters. After increasing the depth, the container handling capacity of the Vallarpadam terminal can be increased to 20 lakh containers from 10 lakh T.E.U. containers.
The development of Kochi port will be a huge backlash to the Colombo port. Currently, huge international cargo ships are reaching Colombo port. Later, the goods are delivered to Kochi and back from here. After deepening the draft depth, these ships can reach the Kochi port.
