Thirivananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions court awarded double life imprisonment to the accused in the case of rape and murder of a Latvian woman in Kovalam. The accused Umesh and Udayakumar were found guilty. The court has also awarded a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh. This should be given to the sister of the murdered woman. The punishment was given for crimes like murder, rape, drug use and destruction of evidence.
The lawyer appearing for the prosecution said that it was considered as a rare case. This is a case that should have received the death penalty. But after considering the favorable circumstances of the accused, the death sentence was avoided. But the accused have to stay in the jail till death.
