New Delhi: General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika, and 11 other officials of the Indian armed forces were killed in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021. The country remembers with respect the army chief who spearheaded important military operations including surgical strikes.

On January 1, 2020, the Central Government appointed Bipin Rawat, who was the Chief of Defence Staff, as the Joint Chief of the three forces. He led all the surgical strikes and airstrikes carried out by India across the border.  Bipin Rawat’s patriotism, dedication and brave actions taken for the country have brought him to the post of joint chief of all three forces.

He started his military service on 16 December 1978 with the 5th Battalion of the 11th Gurkha Rifles. He was the Chief of Defence Staff from December 31, 2016 to December 31, 2019. The nation will always remember with pride his contributions to coordinate the work of India’s three forces to meet the challenges of the new era. The country honoured him with military honours like Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal and Sena Medal.
