Kottayam: Massive protest on buffer zone issue. In Kottayam Erumeli, locals marched to the forest department office and pulled down the board of the office. Then they protested by pouring charcoal oil on the board.
People protested alleging that the area included in the zero buffer zone map released by the Kerala government is forest land. A case has been registered against the panchayat member and others in the incident. The case is against 90 people for destroying public property. According to the new map, Angel Valley and Pampa Valley, the inhabited areas of Wards 11 and 12 of Erumeli Panchayat, are recorded in the forest area.
The Kerala government published the zero buffer zone map and report of the environmentally sensitive area last day. In 2021, the report submitted by the state to the Center was published. The government plans to submit this report along with the satellite survey report and the field survey report together to the Supreme Court by January 11.
