Today is National Army Day, a day to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. This is a day to remember the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers. January 15th is observed as Army Day to commemorate the first day of General KM Kariappa as the first Chief of Army Staff of independent India.

Kariappa came over to the position of Army Chief from the last British Commander in Chief of India. On 15 January, 1949, Kariappa took over the position of army chief. Since then, the country observes January 15 as Army Day. General Kariappa was one of the two persons to receive the title of Field Marshal of India. General Kariappa played an important role for the Indian Army in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947. General Kariappa, a native of Karnataka, had a military career that spanned more than three decades.

The Indian Army is the second largest army in the world. The main duty of the Army is to guard the border, work for the peace and security of the country, to work against terrorist activities and engage in relief operations in emergency situations. The National Army Day honors the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. They serve the nation and give it more importance than their own family and personal life. Army Day is a tribute to every soldier who serves the nation even when we sleep.
