Patna: Patna High Court ordered a stay for the caste-based census of the Bihar Government. The bench consisting of Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Madhuresh Prasad gave the verdict after hearing multiple pleas. The next hearing is scheduled on the 3rd of July.
The case was considered after the Supreme Court asked the High Court to reach a decision, ideally within three days.
The Bihar Government were planning to launch the census and collect the data digitally through a mobile app. The survey would be from panchayat level to district level.
Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar said that the state is not conducting a caste census but it is to take into account of a fresh estimate in the population considering the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities, collecting information of people’s economic state. He also added that the last estimate was done back in 1931.
