Chennai: BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai has criticized the Congress over the ‘Sengol’ issue. He sought an explanation on how the sacred Sengol ended up as a ‘walking stick’ in the museum.
“The Adheenam has spoken in the true spirit of what exactly happened in 1947. Congress has to clarify why Sengol was marked as a walking stick in the museum. They must apologise to the Tamil Nadu people for disrespecting the Sanatana Dharma than getting into why Lord Mountbatten’s picture was not there. This is taking politics to a stupid level”, Annamalai said to a news agency.
The Congress has come out against installing Sengol in the new Parliament yesterday. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh said that there is no documented evidence confirming the Tamil artifact as a symbol of transfer of power from the British. But the BJP has harshly criticized this and many leaders including BJP National Chief JP Nadda came out against Ramesh’s remark.
Meanwhile in a press conference, Thiruvavaduthurai Aadeenam has rejected the allegations of Congress and said that they have records to show that the Sengol was presented to Nehru in 1947. They clarified that those who spread false propaganda are questioning their credibility and such moves to downplay the importance of the sceptre are painful.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on Sunday. The Sengol will then be placed at the Lok Sabha.
