Thiruvananthapuram: The stray female Hanuman Monkey (Grey Langur) that had broken free from its cage at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo was finally caught by the zoo authorities on Thursday. The monkey had been straying inside the city for nearly a month. According to the sources, the monkey was captured from a building in the campus of the Goethe-Zentrum, German Cultural Centre, Trivandrum.
The animal had kept the zoo authorities and nearby residents on their toes as it kept successfully evading every attempt of its capture. After being informed about the presence of the animal, the zoo staff came and caught the monkey using a net. The monkey was later shifted to the zoo enclosure and the zoo authorities informed that its health is fine as of now.
The white-haired monkey with a black face and ears, called as ‘Hanuman Kurangu’ by the localites, was brought to Thiruvananthapuram Zoo recently from a neighbouring state as part of an animal transfer programme. This new member of the zoo tricked the staff and escaped from its enclosure last month. After escaping from the zoo, the monkey had been appearing and disappearing from various places around the zoo premesis. Locals who had learned of the monkey’s escape through the media flocked to various locations in great numbers to see the ape whenever it appeared outside the zoo.
The zoo personnel attempted to entice it by providing it its favorite foods, such as different fruits, as well as by showing its partner. Until it was eventually captured yesterday, zoo management had dispatched devoted employees to track the elusive animal and deliver food and water when needed.
