Kozhikode: The Uniform Civil Code seminar being held by CPI(M) is getting support from various factions and political parties. The Muslim Education Society (MES) state president P K Fazal Gafoor praised the initiative taken by the ruling party and asserted that CPI(M) is the first party to speak out on issues affecting the Muslim community.
Earlier, Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulema had said, it will take part in the event despite the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) rejecting the CPI(M)’s invitation. The decision, however, is said to be an issue of debate within Samastha.
A socio-religious group affiliated with the Mujahid movement called Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen said that they will also take part in the seminar organized by the CPI(M). KNM is confident in the CPI(M)’s stance on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). T P Abdulla Koya Madani, state president of the KNM, stated that there is no reason to question CPI(M) organizing seminars on UCC.
“New interpretations and re-evaluations will be made of every political institution. Nobody would need to question about them. Institutions accept change based on the circumstances. An unavoidable unity that exists now should not be destroyed by a previously held position that was based on the circumstances at the time, he continued. Madani’s comments comes at a time when adversaries are accusing CPI(M) of changing its stance on UCC. He also added that a coordinated protest against UCC with participation from everyone, including Congress, would have been preferable.
While CPI(M) decided to organize the seminar in Kozhikode on July 15, CPI, a major ally of LDF, voiced displeasure over the invitation to the Muslim League. According to reports, the CPI feels that being the ruling party, the CPI(M) should not have invited the Muslim League while disregarding other UDF allies. IUML had rejected CPI(M)’s invitation on Sunday, claiming the Left party was attempting to create “dispute” and “division” by doing so.
Following this, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Monday announced a series of programmes against the Union government’s move to implement UCC. Addressing the media leader of Opposition V D Satheesan said the UDF has decided to organise a ‘Bahuswaratha Sangamam’ (roughly translated as a meet to defend pluralism) on July 29 in protest against the implementation of UCC. Satheesan said no party from LDF would be invited to the meeting.
