Thiruvanathapuram: A youth has been arrested in connection with a break-in and assault on an elderly woman. The Ayirur police apprehended Siyad (24), a resident of Varkala Idawa, for the attack on a 95-year-old woman from Varkala Idava Kappil that occurred on September 19th. The victim, resided with her mentally unwell elder daughter.
Siyad frightened the elder daughter, who was walking on the road, and chased her away. She sought refuge in a nearby Anganwadi. Siyad followed her and entered the house, believing the woman was inside. When he realized the old woman was alone, he inquired about her daughter. Upon learning that her daughter was not at home, Siyad, in a fit of rage, silenced the elderly woman by placing a cloth in her mouth and brutally assaulted her.
Subsequently, when the young woman couldn’t be found in the house, Siyad left after issuing threats to harm the old woman if her daughter were left unattended. The elderly woman sustained injuries to her face during the attack. She reported the incident to a neighbor, who promptly informed the ward member and her younger daughter. Following the ward member’s notification, Ayirur police arrived at the scene and reviewed nearby CCTV footage.
The elder daughter identified the young man, a local resident, during the subsequent investigation. Siyad was arrested in Ernakulam. He was produced in court and remanded in custody.
