Thiruvananthapuram: In a move to support underprivileged students in Kerala, the Transport Department has issued an order to provide free travel for children from very poor families on KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) and private buses. This initiative, aimed exclusively at educational purposes, will be effective on November 1.
Under the new order, approximately 64,000 families identified as extremely poor in the state will get the benefit. Students who have completed the 10th grade will have the facility to study at a nearby school. Higher education scholarships and stipends will be provided. College-going students will enjoy the privilege of free food in the college canteen.
Currently, all students up to the higher secondary level already have free travel on KSRTC buses. Moreover, concession rates are in place for college-level students, adhering to specific criteria. Private buses also offer discounted fares.
