Kozhikode: In a tragic incident, an elderly man commits suicide on Tuesday following the suspension of his disability pension. Joseph alias V Pappachan, (77) a native of Chakkittapara Grama Panachayat, Muthukad, Valayam was found hanging at his house by his neighbours.
According to reports, Joseph had been grappling with severe financial crises for the past five months following the discontinuation of his disability pension. His wife died almost a year ago and his bedridden daughter Jinsy (47) was placed in an orphanage shortly thereafter. Joseph hanged himself after enduring months of frustration in his efforts to receive pension payments. He had been borrowing money daily to sustain his life. Meanwhile, the Panchayat claims that Joseph’s death was not due to non-payment of his pension.
On November 9, Joseph had filed a complaint with multiple authorities, including the Minister, Collector, Peruvannamoozhi Police, and Panchayat Secretary, demanding the release of his pension. In the letter, he warned that if his daughter’s and his pension were not received within 15 days, he would hang himself in the Panchayat office.
