New Delhi: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and long-time BJP MLA, Jagdish Shettar, who had joined the Congress ahead of the 2023 legislative elections last year, returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. Shettar rejoined the BJP in the national capital in the presence of former Karnakata chief minister BS Yediyurappa, Union Minister Bhupender Singh Yadav, Karnataka BJP president Vijayendra Yediyurappa, Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
Jagdish Shettar resigned from the BJP and joined the Congress on April 16, 2023. The reason for leaving the party was a dispute related to seat selection for the Karnataka assembly elections. Subsequently, he contested from Hubballi-Dharwad Central on a Congress ticket but lost to BJP’s Mahesh Tenginkai by 34,000 votes.
Shettar’s return to the BJP is a significant setback for the Congress, and this impact is expected to be reflected in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shettar is a prominent leader from the Lingayat sect, known for its substantial influence in North Karnataka.
