New Delhi: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took out a massive mashal juloos (torchlight march) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday night, signaling a wind of change in the campus dominated by the left.
More than 1,500 students participated in the torchlight march, which began from Ganga Dhaba of JNU and ended at Chandrabhaga hostel. The march was led by ABVP president candidate Umesh Chandra Ajmeera, vice president candidate Deepika Sharma, secretary candidate Arjun Anand and joint secretary candidate Govind Dangi.
Slogans ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ rang across the JNU campus, which is considered as a stronghold of left politics. The nationalist students sloganeering is a stark contrast to the usual anti-India sloganeering by leftist student organizations.
Election to the JNU Students’ Union is scheduled to be held on 22nd March.
The ABVP had been facing an uphill task fighting the left-leaning student organizations’ hold on the campus. The left student organizations have turned the prestigious institution into a den of anti-national activities and have often been in the news for activities against Bharat. The protest and anti-India sloganeering on 9 February, 2016, in JNU against the capital punishment to Parliament attack convict. Afzal Guru, is still fresh in the nation’s memories.
However, this year ABVP if facing the election with high hopes to bring down the leftist domination in the campus.
Expressing optimism, the ABVP JNU Unit Secretary Vikas Patel said, “Today we took out a huge Mashal Juloos from Ganga Dhaba to Chandrabhaga hostel in Jawaharlal Nehru University in which a large number of students participated. It is clear from the crowd gathered in this Mashal juloos that the leftists are going to be wiped out from JNU and the Vidyarthi Parishad is coming with strength on all four seats in the JNU Student Union elections.”
