New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that a corrupt Chief Minister is unfit to retain power, following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the liquor policy case. In response to Kejriwal’s arrest, the BJP has initiated measures to escalate demands for his resignation, aiming to intensify protests against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).Accusing AAP and the Chief Minister of undermining the state’s governance system, the BJP has advocated for the imposition of President’s rule unless Kejriwal steps down from his position.
The party contends that allowing Kejriwal, currently under arrest, to continue governing would lead to a constitutional crisis, as prison rules restrict his communication with the outside world. Citing Article 299 AA of the Constitution, which empowers the Lt. Governor to recommend President’s rule in Delhi in the event of a governance crisis, the BJP further intensifies pressure on AAP’s administration. AAP, despite holding a majority in the assembly, faces the prospect of losing governance and suffering a significant political setback.
Meanwhile, uncertainty looms within AAP regarding Kejriwal’s potential successor. Reports suggest that AAP leaders have engaged in discussions with Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, exploring potential candidates for the party presidency. Names circulating for consideration include Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Ministers Atishi Marlena Singh, and Saurabh Bhardwaj. As the Lok Sabha elections loom, AAP finds itself without a leader to steer the party forward, exacerbated by the incarceration of its top and second-level leaders. Prominent figures including Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and Sanjay Singh have also been arrested in connection with the same case, deepening the crisis within the party.
