New Delhi: The BJP government scored a major win today in the Upper House of the Parliament as the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, got passed in the House today.
The Bill, popularly called the Triple Talaq Bill was passed with the support of 99 votes while 84 opposed it. The Bill secures to protect Muslim women from the evil of Triple Talaq. It seeks to criminalize Muslim men who divorce their spouse by resorting to the instant divorce.
The Bill will now go to the President for his approval.
This is a historical moment for the Muslim women of India who have been suffering from this injustice for a long time. It is also a historic moment for the constitutional values of equality and gender justice enshrined in the constitution of India.
While introducing the bill, Union Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said, “It’s an issue related to humanity…it is related to the dignity of the women…It is an issue of gender justice and equality.”
