Washington: In the wake of the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, US President Joe Biden has commended the swift and courageous actions of the Indian crew members aboard the cargo ship ‘Dali’. Their timely alert to the Maryland Department of Transportation, after the vessel struck the bridge, enabled authorities to preemptively close the bridge to traffic, a decision that President Biden emphasized “undoubtedly” saved lives.
The Singapore-flagged freight ship, managed by the Synergy Maritime Group, boasted a 22-member crew, all hailing from India, according to a statement released by the shipping company on Tuesday.
Expressing gratitude for the heroism displayed by the crew, Maryland Governor Wes Moore remarked,”We can confirm that the crew notified authorities of a power issue. These people are heroes. We’re thankful that between the Mayday and the collapse we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic. These people are heroes. They saved lives last night.”
The incident occurred early Tuesday when a cargo ship encountered a power failure, leading to a collision with the bridge and subsequent collapse. Six individuals were reported missing and presumed deceased.
