New Delhi: Bharat has warned the US against its unnecessary interference in the ED’s arrest of Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the liquor policy case. A senior US diplomat was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs to express Bharat’s strong objection.
“We take strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India,” said the MEA press note on Wednesday.
Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena was summoned to the MEA more than 24 hours after the US remarks were made, where Bharat reiterated its stance against external interference in its internal affairs.
“In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents,” the MEA press note said.
“India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted,” it added.
Earlier this week, a US State Department spokesperson said that the US was closely following reports of the arrest of Kejriwal and encouraged a fair, transparent and timely legal process for him.
