New Delhi: The Indian National Congress on Wednesday, decided to drop Supriya Shrinate, the head of its social media department, from the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh amidst a growing controversy over her comments regarding Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kangana Ranaut.
Supriya Shrinate, who had previously contested the seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but faced defeat against BJP’s Pankaj Chaudhary, found herself out of the race this time. Congress has chosen Virendra Chaudhary for the constituency, despite earlier speculations suggesting Supriya Shrinate might be re-fielded.
After the BJP’s announcement of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut as their candidate in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Supriya Shrinate took to Instagram to share a post disparaging the actress. The post, which included a picture of Kangana wearing a corset top, sparked a significant political controversy. Subsequently, Supriya Shrinate withdrew the post.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) additionally forwarded a letter to the Election Commission, urging action against Supriya regarding the issue. Responding to this, the Election Commission issued Supriya Shrinate a show cause notice for her remarks on a deleted social media post, deeming it ‘undignified and in bad taste.’
