New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly criticized the Congress party, citing a media report that allegedly reveals the party’s “callous” decision to cede Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka.
“Eye opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds- we can’t ever trust Congress,” he said on X, sharing the report.
The report, based on a RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai, sheds light on the decision made by the then Indira Gandhi government in 1974 to hand over the territory in the Palk Strait to Sri Lanka. The report also cites first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s comments on the issue, a source of dispute between Bharat and Lanka, that he would have no hesitation in giving up claims on the island.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his disapproval of the Congress party’s actions concerning Katchatheevu on X. He accused them of willingly surrendering Katchatheevu without regrets. Shah criticized the Congress for various instances where its members allegedly spoke against national unity, denigrated Indian culture, and advocated for division. He asserted that such actions demonstrate their opposition to the unity and integrity of Bharat, suggesting their intention to divide or break the nation.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that the decision made by the Congress government had resulted in the capture and imprisonment of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities, as they occasionally ventured near the island, which is merely 25 km off the coast of Tamil Nadu. Sudhanshu Trivedi highlighted that the island was under Indian control until 1975, and Tamil Nadu fishermen used to visit it. However, after the agreement signed with Sri Lanka under the Indira Gandhi government, their access was restricted.
