New Delhi: Once again, the Congress party has included the caste census agenda in its election manifesto. Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the manifesto was unveiled by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
The manifesto pledges significant reforms, including the introduction of GST 2.0 to modify the country’s economy’s cornerstone, along with a promise to double GDP within ten years. Additionally, the manifesto guarantees the implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) recommended by the Swaminathan Commission for farmers nationwide.
In 2010, the UPA government had vehemently opposed the Swaminathan Commission report in Parliament, arguing that it proposed prices higher than the average cost of production. The then Minister of State for Agriculture, KV Thomas, declared that the government rejected the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.
In a notable shift from the past, the manifesto also promises amendments to the anti-defection law, aiming to provide relief to Congress from party members’ departures. Furthermore, the party pledges to mend relations with China and Maldives. However, the manifesto remains silent on subject such as Article 370 and the Citizenship Amendment Act.
