New Delhi: Senior Congress leader, noted economist, and former Union Minister, Jairam Ramesh, acclaimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his governance and said that demonizing him all the time and not recognizing his work would be wrong.
He reminded his audience that Modi was re-elected by more than 30% of the electorate based on his work that he did between 2014 and 2019.
While speaking at a launch of a book, yesterday, Jairam Ramesh said, “He (Modi) talks in a language that connects him with the people. Unless we recognise that he is doing things which people recognize and which have not been done in the past, we are not going to be able to confront this guy.”
He added, “Also, if you are going to demonize him all the time, you are not going to be able to confront him.”
The former Union Minister asked his party colleagues to recognize the traits that helped Modi to power and the get re-elected. He brought into focus Narendra Modi’s trait of “economics of governance” that has helped him achieve unprecedented victory.
To explain his point Jairam Ramesh spoke about Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUJ).
He told, “In 2019, all of us in the political discourse made fun of one or two of his programmes, but it has turned out in all electoral studies that the PMUJ is one single program which has been able to connect him with crores and crores of women and given him the political traction which he didn’t have in 2014.”
The Congress leader said that if the party continues to say that the achievements are not true then it is hard to confront Modi.
Jairam Ramesh, a former Union Minister in the Manmohan Singh government, is also a noted economist. He graduated from IIT Bombay and went to the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College.
