Chandigarh: Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, today, said that he wants a National Register of Citizens (NRC) implemented in the state also. However, he did not go into any details and said that he had discussed about it with Justice Bhalla, who is currently working on NRC and sought his cooperation.

Speaking to the media after his visit with Justice Bhalla, Khattar said, “Justice Bhalla had headed the Haryana Human Rights Commission besides holding various other positions. These days, he is working on NRC. I also said that we shall implement NRC in Haryana and sought his cooperation on how to implement it. He [Justice Bhalla] has also suggested that Haryana should also have a Law Commission. We shall examine that too and if people get benefitted with this, we shall also constitute one in the state.”

Manohar Lal Khattar visited the Justice as part of BJP’s nationwide Jan Sampark programme ahead of the elections to the state legislative scheduled for next month.

Justice Bhalla, who is the former Haryana Human Rights Commission, said that he had suggested the NRC to the Chief Minister and also to appoint a State Law Commission.

He said, “I think the Model Code of Conduct shall also be imposed tomorrow. Thus, they cannot work on this [NRC]. But once the BJP returns to power, then, of course, things might come upon this. As of now, saying much on this is premature. But, it was his desire that Haryana should also have NRC so that people should not face any problems. It will be a card like Adhaar card, but a separate one.”

The NRC implemented in Assam is implemented to weed out illegal migrants into India who have no citizenship but utilize all the benefits due to an Indian citizen. The current NRC implementation is supervised by the Supreme Court of India. Every effort is on not to exclude the genuine citizens of India. Even though around 19 lakh people are currently out of the NRC they are given ample time and help to prove their citizenship.
