Chennai: Four lakh bank employees will go on strike on 26 and 27 September to protest against the government’s move to merge public sector banks.
All India’s Bank Officer’s Confederation’s (AIBOC) State Secretary, R. Sekaran said, “From September 26 to 27, four organizations representing four lakh officers throughout the country will go on strike. We are opposing the merger of public sector banks as it is against the general public.”
He told that the Central government did not consult the bank workers and the general public before the decision to merge the banks were taken. The demands of the strikers include pending wage revision, reduction in service charges levied by banks on customers and ensuring adequate staffing.
Sekaran warned that around Rs. 48,000 crore worth of transactions will be affected in a single day of strike by the banking workers. When asked about the inconvenience caused to the customers, he simply said that they are protesting for the interest of the customers.
