New York: The India-US bilateral meeting at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly tilted in favour of India as Donald Trump endorsed India’s fight against terrorism and the abrogation of Article 370.
The US President’s public acceptance of Narendra Modi’s effectiveness in tackling the terrorism and Kashmir issue is seen as a slap to Pakistan’s efforts to woo the United States.
Donald Trump said, “I know that your Prime Minister will take care of it..you have a great Prime Minister and he will solve the problem, I have no doubt about it.”
While asked what message Trump wanted to give Pakistan after Imran Khan admitting of training al-Qaida terrorists groups, the US President responded, “The message is not for me to give…it is for Prime Minister Modi to give, and he gave it loud and clear. I am sure he will be able to handle it.”
Trump also praised Modi for tackling national issues in India and said that he is a father figure for India. He recalled the time before Narendra Modi became Prime Minister when the nation was a place of strife and dissent.
Donald Trump said, “He brought things together like a father…you don’t hear about dissension any more.”
Though, Trump said that he would love to mediate between India and Pakistan during his meeting with Imran Khan, the President was quick to put a rider saying that he will do it only if both the countries agrees on it.
The recent endorsement of Modi by Donald Trump shows how much the US President values Narendra Modi above the Pakistani leadership. The United States is now well aware about how Pakistan double crossed the US when it comes to fight against terrorism.
Moreover, the US is concerned about the rising threat of China and knows that it cannot pin its hope on Pakistan, who is an ally of China in the region. The US policy makers have now come to the conclusion that only a strong friendship with India could leverage their position in the region.
