New Delhi: A group of students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, which includes the Student Union leaders have blocked ambulance and doctors from attending a sick dean on campus. The incident took place after students began protests during a meeting of Inter Hostel Administration (IHA).

The students were protesting against increase in hostel fee, electricity charges, and water charges. During the meeting with IHA some students who were not part of the committee entered the area and held the dean hostage. The students resorted to sloganeering and aggressive tactics against the committee members.

The dean, Umesh Kadam fell sick with high blood pressure. However, the students did not allow the ambulance to transport the ailing dean to a hospital. They blocked the ambulance and also did not even allow the doctors to check on the dean.

Umesh Kadam spoke to ANI and said that JNU Students Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh, Vice President of the union, Saket Moon, the Joint Secretary, Mohd Danish were directly involved in the incident.

Kadam said, “I’m a high BP patient, I requested that medical team be brought in. But students didn’t let them in. We somehow managed to come out but students ‘gheraoed’ the ambulance. I want to go to Spinal Center as recommended by doctors but I’m not being allowed.

The dean is now confirmed in the doctor’s office at the campus and the students have surrounded the health center. Alarmingly, the sick dean is held hostage by the JNU students.

Condemning the incident the Vice Chancellor, M. Jagadesh Kumar said, “The university administration is contemplating on a severe action against some JNU students whose conduct today has been not only unbecoming but dangerous and shameful. This kind of behaviour by a section of JNU students is highly condemnable and outrageous.”
