Prayagraj: The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sent a house tax notice on Anand Bhawan, the ancestral house of Jawaharlal Nehru. The notice seeks payment of dues amounting to Rs 4.35 crore which also includes tax arrears since 2003.
Anand Bhawan, Swaraj Bhawan and Jawahar Planetarium is all run by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, a charitable trust headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
However, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund administrative secretary N Balakrishnan claims that the notice cite anomalies in tax assessment and has sought exemption.
“The letter has been forwarded to zonal office (four) with instructions to carry out a detailed survey and submit a report regarding the total pending dues. We will take a decision after receiving the survey report,” said P K Mishra, chief tax assessment officer, PMC.
PMC officials claimed that the trust paid house tax earlier but later in 2003 they stopped the payment.
